Pond Aeration Basics

Before Aeration

Decomposing organic material (leaves, fish waste etc.) settle to the bottom of the pond and begin to decay. As they decay they consume oxygen and release toxic gasses (nitrogen, ammonia etc.). These toxic gases become trapped in the deeper, colder, and now oxygen starved water. The lack of dissolved oxygen in the water, is known as an anaerobic condition. Because of this condition, the beneficial bacteria which breathes oxygen and releases CO2 begins to die off further complicating the problem. This natural process occurs in all bodies of water, but it is not until you reach a unhealthy balance that the problems begin to arrive. The result of an unbalanced ECO-System leads to the dreaded ALGAE. ALGAE consumes nitrogen, ammonia, and soluble phosphates, and releases oxygen through photosynthesis. Since they use photosynthesis, they are typically treated as part of the plant kingdom, (even though all algae is not). The algae is trying to replenish the oxygen level in the body of water while reducing the amount of nitrogen and ammonia. The algae is trying to re-balance the ECO-System. So now in order to get rid of the algae, we dump some chemicals into the pond. Which kills the algae, and settles to the bottom, and begins to decay, which consumes more oxygen, and releases more toxic gases, and the cycle begins.

After Aeration

Upon removal of the toxic gasses, and the increase of dissolved oxygen into the water. The beneficial bacteria once again can live in the lower depths of the pond. The beneficial bacteria begins to consume and break down the decomposing organic material, thus eliminating the food source for algae.

Forms of Aeration

The key to a good aeration system is getting the toxic gases, released from the water.

The original pond aeration systems used onshore compressors, and pumped air through diffusers placed on the bottom of the pond. This introduces air only into the target zone, and not the entire pond. This creates minimal flow and will not circulate the entire pond. Over time, it will help remove the toxic gases and increase the dissolved oxygen in the water. These compressor & diffuser systems or "bubblers", can take up to a year to accomplish what the Air-Max™ Pond Aeration unit can do in just a few months.

Surface Aeration systems pull their water from the top 1 or 2 feet of the pond, and have an 8 to 10 ft diameter spray pattern. These various units expose just surface water to the atmosphere. NOT deep water, where the oxygen is really needed in a pond or a lake. They do not provide proper circulation and aeration to your pond.  These units fail to be effective by only churning water on the surface, and they can be extremely noisy. In comparison, the Air-Max™ Pond Aeration unit has it's intake located deep below the surface, which provides quiet operation, and aids in the break up of thermal stratification in your pond. This increased deep water circulation helps release the toxic gases, while increasing the oxygen level to all of the water in the pond or lake dramatically.

The Air-Max™ Pond Aerator is far superior to any other pond aeration unit currently produce. Mr. Mom's has been manufacturing the Air-Max™ for over two DECADES. With that much time and experience, we are proud to provide you with a product of quality, innovation, and energy efficient. For the ultimate in aeration efficiency the Air-Max™ only real choice. Homogenized air and water under pressure creates an air entrained fountain spray and is the superior choice in pond aeration. The Chart below indicates how different our Air Max/S™ is in relation to a typical noisy, and inefficient on shore compressor unit using a diffuser plate.
